CHARACTER
Character Name: Roxy (Mom) Lalonde
Canon: Homestuck
Age: 33, appears to be much younger, 25ish if you will, thank you.
Timeline: Act 5 Act 2 Post death.
If playing another character from the same canon, how will you deal with this?: N/A
Personality:
2 1/2 oz Vodka
1 oz Science
1/2 oz Maternal affection
1 tbsp Sass
1 tsp Magic
Rim cocktail glass with magic.
Pour the vodka, maternal affection and science into a cocktail shaker half-filled with ice. Shake well, strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add sass to your liking.
Drink.
Repeat until drunk.
Outside the narrow perceptions of an angsty teen's narrative, Dr. Roxy Lalonde is a surprisingly open and friendly woman, if not just a little overeager and more than a bit odd. She takes both her careers in motherhood and SCIENCE very seriously, and has done her best to juggle them to the best of her abilities. For the most part, Roxy is an open, caring person towards those she considers her own, and polite at the very least to new faces. To an acquaintance, she remains genial and carries herself in a professional, yet easily approachable manner, offering a helping hand or her services where applicable.
With those closest to her, she is playful and affectionate, if not outright devoted to them and their overall well-being. Roxy was born to be a mother, as she possesses an overwhelming desire to please and take care of her loved ones to the best of her abilities. All in all, she is a friendly and fun-loving individual, exhibiting warmth and exercising her intense desire to mother and dote on everyone in some way or another, should the pertinent party grant her approval. In some cases she ignores approval altogether, having to pull a parental override on Rose's "Don't Hug Me" rule once or twice before and completely undeterred from cuddling someone else if the setting calls for it.
Once one is made aware of her unfortunate alcohol dependency, such uninhibited affection could easily be interpreted as just a drunken exaggeration, as she is almost always, if not constantly drinking. It's rare to see Roxy without some sort of beverage in her hand, but endless inebriation aside, she is quite sincere in her sentimentality when it comes to her friends and family.
She just also happens to be drunk.
In times of high stress or if she's just none too fond of someone, she will take on an icy demeanor, condescending in the best of situations and downright venomous in the worst. For the most part, she doesn't particularly enjoy getting herself all worked up over things, and can normally rationalize and calm herself down before getting out of hand. In cases where she's hit her limit with a situation or person, she will be quick to turn to the bottle as if it's some magic elixir that can keep her "normal." Roxy would like to believe that sobriety is a concept she doesn't have to accept if she doesn't want to-- and she doesn't -- and while she's well aware of her addiction, she does not deem it a crippling dependency or a threat to the well-being of her career or home life (even if it did cause some problems here and there) so there's no reason for her to stop, right?
Right, of course.
In both the alpha and beta timelines, Roxy was shown to have a less than exceptional grasp on how to do anything other than cling and shower those closest to her in love and adoration, and then drown her problems in booze at every possible opportunity. Having grown up alone, alpha!Roxy compensated for her loneliness by getting close to her online friends and flirting/doting on them with all her pent up affection. As an adult, this universe's Roxy seems to goes to great lengths for those she cares about, sometimes bordering on the absurd, or in some cases, drastically overprotective. Because her loved ones are so dear to her, she does not hesitate to come to their aid, or impulsively compose a six point plan to prevent them from doing something that may not be in their best interest. Of course everyone knows she has their best interests at heart, but more often than not, poor Roxy ends up making things worse than before.
In Rose's case, Roxy acted as she believed a mother should and showered her daughter with love, affection, and any gift her seemingly bottomless bank account could buy. Though as Rose grew and started down the path of maturity, it seemed she was quickly becoming disenchanted with her mother's usual routine of drinking and doting. The older Rose got, the more evident it was that they'd reached an impasse that could only be handled through passive-aggressive acts of "kindness" towards one another. Roxy seemed to either be blissfully unaware of Rose's motives or did retaliate in her own little way, because after a while she began to up the ante in terms of obnoxiously thoughtful things to do for her daughter. Admittedly, dropping 15k on having an ostentatious frame welded to the freezer door to commemorate a drawing Rose did when she was younger is perhaps going a little overboard, but it really seemed like a great idea at the time!
It didn't take long for her to really catch on to Rose's growing disdain for her, and while she continued to dote in her own little ways, it became clear that her daughter was truly under the impression every attempt Roxy made at bonding was a passive-aggressive jab at her interests. It made no sense, she'd done everything she possibly could to make her little girl happy, but... maybe it really had been too much.
Maybe she did screw up somewhere and she hadn't noticed. Maybe if she hadn't been trying to juggle motherhood, her career, and two or three bottles of wine every night, their relationship may have run a little smoother. Even the knowledge that every parent had problems with their kids at this age, even knowing she wasn't alone in that fight, she still couldn't help but feel like she had gone at the whole thing all wrong. Deep in her heart, even though Roxy may have felt she hadn't done enough for Rose, she knew that she still raised a wonderful and brilliant child, who she believed had the strength to pull through this game long after she was gone. The game began and the guardians believed wholly and truly in their children, each of them putting their absolute faith in the skills imparted to the kids, as well as their own natural talents to help them throughout their journey. And that despite what reservations the guardians, as parents may have had, they had to know when to let go and let the kids do what they must.
It still left Roxy with the feeling that she wasn't finished, that she had too much that she hadn't said to Rose, so much she still needed to teach her. There were still so many apologies that hadn't been made.
Unfortunately, there hadn't been time for any of that.
History: Right this way, please.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
Strengths: Roxy possesses an extreme amount of empathy for those around her, despite her ability to give an Arctic-quality cold shoulder when necessary. In a lot of ways her intense desire to please her friends and family can be a strength as much as it can be a weakness, but she doesn't seem to find any qualms with being helpful. As detached and "deliberately derisive" as Rose finds her mother to be, Roxy's maternal intuition and desire for her daughter's well-being is unyielding in it's intensity. She may not always know exactly how to go about it all, but damnit if she isn't going to try her best.
A mother will do whatever is best for her children.
Weaknesses: Alcohol. Her daughter. Actually, just children in general.Striders. Can take a punch with the best of them and has excellent self-preservation skills, but is just as susceptible to death as any other human being.
Abilities: Roxy is skilled in martial arts, preferring to use her fists in close-range combat. She is also an exceptional shot; preference leaning towards high-power rifles, but is just as proficient with any other firearm. As a Guardian she also possesses superhuman speed, strength and endurance. In canon, during a particularly heated STRIFE, she uses her "Blotto-parry" ability to defend herself by using her constant state of drunkenness against direct offensive attacks.
She apparently wields the ability to be completely stone cold drunk and still function like a normal human being on a daily basis, as well as kick major ass. How?
Guardian powers.
Relationships to Canon Characters:
Rose Lalonde: Rose is Roxy's adoptive and genetic daughter, of which she shares a rocky relationship in canon. A lot of what we know about Roxy is told from Rose's point of reference; the eyes of an angst-ridden thirteen year old going through her dark and mysterious goth phase. When you consider those sorts of kids in particular, you can imagine how they can perceive an over-affectionate but absolutely clueless woman "pandering to their every need" as if they're somehow affronted by the gesture. Unfortunate misconceptions aside, Roxy adores her daughter and really only ever intended to bond with her, but seemed to overshoot the mark every time instead. Rose found such grandiose displays of affection could no longer be taken with any seriousness, and as such dismissed them as more passive-aggressive attempts at "supporting" her interests. This is far from the truth-- even Rose's friends can see that-- but reasoning with teenage girls is one hell of a task.
Besides, it's not like Roxy could blame her for being stubborn.
It is in the genes, after all.
First Person: Test-drive Meme Thread
Third Person: Last she recalled, she was having a quaint dinner in a bloody beautiful castle with Mr. Egbert and that... creature had appeared.
Everything after that is nothing but static.
Heaviness weighed on her heart when she thought about him, knowing full well what had happened to the both of them at the hands of that monster. They had both accepted this fate; knowing danger was a part of the game, and as long as they were around they would do everything in their power to see to it that their kids got exactly where they needed to be. Monsters hadn't posed much of a threat through the majority of this game, and even though both she and Mr. Egbert were powerful on their own --even moreso together-- it was not enough to stop that beast from tearing through them.
That was her purpose though, wasn't it? The part she played was to get little Rose prepared for that... game. That was it. Rose, John, Dave, Jade... those kids were the only ones who were supposed to see that game through.
"Game." Hah. What kind of parents would even allow their kids to participate in something like this? God, maybe she was a bad mother...
Oh, no, no, she couldn't allow herself to think that way...
These children had a chance. Most of their world was up in flames and she knew at least her daughter would survive.
It brought about the end of the world for them, and it was up to Rose and her friends to save it. All of the Guardians had absolute faith in their sky-children; those little bundles of joy that dropped into their lives without warning, that once they'd been properly trained they would go on to save at least some aspects of this world for the greater good. Once it was all over, they would be fine, right?
Roxy did not doubt Rose's abilities, and never would, but it didn't mean she wasn't scared absolutely shitless for her daughter's well-being.
She knew Rose would be fine without her, but... one could rarely do much to quell the worries of a mother.
